“I’m going to wait here with you,” Carson said. “I know Drew didn’t say I had to, but I don’t think you need to be alone right now. That all right with you?”

  She nodded.

Carson flicked on the TV and started flipping channels, settling on an old movie she hadn’t seen in a while. Eventually, Lexie relaxed into the cushions and before long, she fell asleep. The next thing she knew, Carson was waking her up to tell her he was leaving, because Drew was pulling up to the house. A glance at the clock showed it was a little after midnight. How she’d slept all day, she had no idea. Stress. Had to be.

When Drew stepped inside the house, he looked worried, his gaze seeking her out. He hugged his brother, thanked him for waiting with her, and then briskly walked to her side. Drew knelt at her feet and gathered her hands in his.

  “Lexie, are you all right?”

“I’m fine, Drew. You didn’t have to rush home. It could have waited another five days, but Carson insisted it couldn’t.”

“Well, what is it? Are you sick? Did something happen at the trailer park?”

“No, none of those. I just…” She took a breath to gather her courage. Looking into his beautiful eyes, she tried to steady her nerves. “I’m pregnant.”

His eyes widened slightly and the hand gripping hers tightened. “Are you sure?”

She nodded. “I brought the tests with me, in case you needed to see them. For proof or whatever. I took two. Both came back positive.”

“Have you been to the doctor yet? Are you okay? Is the baby okay?”

“I just found out about twenty minutes before Carson called you. So no, I haven’t been to the doctor yet. I did start taking birth control pills two weeks ago, though, so it’s probably a good idea if I go in.”

“I know a baby isn’t what you were planning right now,” he said, “but are you at least a little happy about it?”

“Truthfully? I’ve been too scared about what you’d think to stop and figure out how I feel. Other than scared.”

He sat on the sofa and pulled her into his arms. “Honey, I know we didn’t plan this baby, but believe me, I’m happy. I love the idea of having a family with you. One of the guys on the circuit has a new baby girl. He was showing her picture to everyone that would stop and look. You know what I thought when I saw that picture? I thought, that’s going to be me one day. And do you know who I thought her mother would be?”

She shook her head against his shoulder.

  “You.”

“What’s going to happen between us now?” she asked, pulling back to look in his eyes.

“Now, you’re going to move in here with me, so I can dote on you while you’re pregnant, and so I can dote on our child after they’re born. And maybe one day, after you’ve seen that I pick up after myself, don’t drink to excess, and that we can live peacefully together, maybe you’ll agree to marry me.”

  “One day.”

  He nodded. “One day.”

“Drew… is it too soon to tell you that I love you?” she asked softly.

His lips tipped up on one corner. “No, honey. It isn’t. Know how I know?”

  She shook her head.

“Because I love you, too. I think I fell for you the moment you admitted how you really felt about me in the bar parking lot.”

She caressed the back of his neck before pressing her lips to his. The kiss was soft and sweet as their lips caressed and stroked. When she pulled back, she smiled up at him, hoping that all the love she felt for him was shining in her eyes.

“Take me to bed, Drew. Make love to me.”

“With pleasure, Lexie. Tonight will be our new beginning. The beginning of a life together.”

As he kissed her once more, he lifted her into his arms and carried her up to his room.
